Sleep (or lack of!) is a very normal source of stress in a new parent’s life. I commonly hear questions and concerns such as:  

"My baby won’t nap."  

"Is my baby sleeping enough?"  

"When will my baby sleep though the night?"  

"Will I have to rock my baby to sleep every night?"  

"Is it okay if I nurse my baby to sleep every night?"  

"How do I stop co-sleeping?"

"I am so emotional and depressed from my lack of sleep."  

"Is it okay if my baby sleeps with me?"  

"I can’t be present for my baby during the day because I am so exhausted from being up all night with him/her."

Sleep is very important for our babies as it directly impacts their mental and physical development. Having our babies develop good sleep habits is also important for YOU – the parents. Health and safety can become concerns for parents who do not get enough sleep.  Parents who have not gotten enough sleep are often more stressed, more distracted, less tolerant, and can even experience depression (including intensified postpartum depression).

What many parents do not know is that good sleep habits need to be taught. Being able to fall asleep and stay asleep is a skill that needs to be learned.


Amy is a miracle worker! Initially, I had very little hope for my situation. With my older 2 children, I never sought help with their poor sleeping habits and they never slept through the night until age 2+. With my third, at 12 months he was still waking every 2 hours to nurse. Nursing was the only way I could get him back to sleep. Exhausted does not even describe how I felt. Mind Body Family’s Sleep Consulting services teach parents how to examine their baby’s daily and nightly routines, and adjust and/or generate particular patterns to help create better and longer sleep.  It is very important to look at the baby’s entire routine including eating, napping, and playtime, in order to properly create an effective sleep pattern at night. During your Sleep Consultation we will discuss where your baby should sleep, and how to create an environment that is comfortable, safe, and soothing for your baby. We will also discuss how to minimize crying during bedtime as well as different soothing intervals and techniques. There is no single method or technique of sleep training that is perfect for every family, therefore we treat each family's situation differently and thoroughly discuss their goals and comfort level with different techniques and training methods. Our Sleep Consultations are customized and personalized to each client (and baby). Working privately with each client allows us to answer specific questions, address specific needs, create a personalized plan, and work within the client’s house to create an atmosphere for healthy sleep.

Most parents know that a brand new baby is not going to sleep though the night right away, and they prepare themselves for sleepless nights. However when days turn into weeks, and weeks turn into months of interrupted sleep it can often lead to parents not being able to fully enjoy this time in their life, as well as their baby’s life. It is important that good sleep habits are introduced early and that parents are equip with the information and skills they need to teach their children life-long, healthy sleeping habits.
